It has often been said that first impressions are very important and that as a general rule of thumb first impressions are made in the first 3-10 seconds.

To be honest my first impressions had been received well before we arrived at ChangshaFirstHigh School.

We had arrived inChangshato a warm welcome from Mr. Zhao, our Hotel was great and after we had settled in I was informed that a volunteer translator would be available to accompany me to the school. I felt very impressed and realized that the people who had organized the 100th anniversary celebration were putting a lot of effort into every detail.

Upon arriving at the entrance toward the school my first impression of theChangsha FirstHigh Schoolwas WOW.

A multitude of people where coming and going, hustling about. Excitement was in the air and even though I could not understand the language I could tell by the smiles and handshaking and picture taking that everyone was very happy to be here.

Two lines of fresh faced smiling and enthusiastic students, dressed in their colourful school uniforms lined the periphery of the entranceway which led into the school grounds. As we turned in toward the school and began walking between the two lines of students we were greeted with warm welcomes in both Chinese and English.

Mr.  Zhao led us in toward the school, my wife Fu Yan and Mr. Zhao were speaking rapidly to each other while meeting and greeting a number of people as we made our way along. My translator guide Ms. Zhang  kept me busy informing me about the various displays and current goings on at the school.

Turning to my right I could see and hear in the distance a number of people practicing for some sort of performance.

Inside the school we were led up the stairs to the second floor and into an area filled with pictures, biographies, accomplishments and awards of past alumni.

I know I had said WOW before but I will say it again, WOW… very impressive and the school should be very proud that so many very influential men and women have been motivated, inspired and educated within it’s walls.

After meeting briefly with the school Principal and Vice Principals I know that the students are in good hands, I can imagine many of the current and future students will also reach the sky.

Later in the day as the sun set in the western sky we were taken to watch a performance. I was shocked at the number of people in the audience. Hundreds.. no, thousands were in attendance. Television cameras swung into place as glamorous women in evening gowns and gentlemen in suits made their way across the stage to host the night’s festivities.

I sat in awe as one performance after another took the stage, the amount of work, the energy and the talent was incredible.

I could go on and on about how impressed I was with the entire weekend but this is not intended to be a novel. Some of the highlights included the alumni signing their names along the wall, watching the performances of the 1978-1979-1980 classes, the delicious dinners and meeting many alumni who I can now call my friends. The second night’s stage performances were fantastic and well the entire experience was amazing.

I feel very lucky and honoured to have been a witness to the 100th anniversary celebration. It was first class all the way.

First impressions are important but lasting Impressions are what counts, my lasting impressions are thatChangshaFirstHigh Schoolis first class all the way, with a proud, accomplished and honoured past and a very bright future.
